Can the Duties and Taxes be prepaid on an international shipment?

WineDirect can ship wine DDP (delivered duty paid) to most countries EXCEPT Canada. We can provide you with estimated costs for Shipping and the Duties & Taxes. Please see section “How do we get started?” below for the required information needed to obtain an estimate for you.

How much wine can I ship?

Each country has its own set of guidelines regarding how much wine can be shipped to a Consumer. Typically, the limits are per shipment, however some countries have stricter guidelines. Please ask your Account Manager about the Consumer limits for the country you wish to ship wine in to and we will happily provide you this information.

What day can I ship?

  • Most countries: Monday, Tuesday, and Friday (holidays excluded)
  • Canada and Puerto Rico: Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (holidays excluded)

How do we get started?

To obtain an estimate for Shipping/Duties/Taxes, please fill out and return the Int’l Shipping template, which includes the following information:
  • City, Postal Code, and Country
  • Wine description (exact name as listed in WDF portal, bottle size, alcohol %, country of manufacture, $ value, wine type: red/white/sparkling)
  • Number of bottles per line item
With this information, we can return to you the estimated costs for your potential International shipment (shipping, duties/taxes and WD Admin fee). You can utilize our estimate for charging your customer accordingly. Please allow up to 48 hours turnaround time.

Special Note for Canada Shipments

For shipments to Canada, we can create estimated costs for the potential shipment (shipping, duties/taxes, WD Admin fee); however, the duties and taxes are REQUIRED to be paid by the recipient. (This requirement is from the respective Provincial Liquor Board). The estimate is a great tool to provide to your customers so that they are aware of what their financial responsibility will likely be. Canada can be quite expensive (sometimes up to 200% of the value of the wine), and it’s helpful to provide this information upfront so that your customer can decide whether or not they would like to proceed.
Important: A refused shipment exported from the USA cannot be returned to us – it will be destroyed instead.

How do we proceed with international shipping?

When you are ready to proceed with your international shipment, please follow these instructions:
  1. Place your customer’s order as a Will Call order at least 48 hours in advance of desired ship date (Include the WD Fulfilment Center address as the ship-to address)
  2. Email your Account Manager with the order number, and the Int’l Quote template that you received back from us, as it should contain the information below:
    • Recipient name
    • Recipient address, city, postal code, country (residential or business)
    • Recipient contact phone number and email address
    • Desired ship or delivery date
    • Purpose: samples or personal use
Recommendation: We highly recommend requesting plastic bottle sleeves and shipping in Styrofoam shippers. The bottle sleeves will protect the label from getting scuffed and contain any breakage should that occur in transit. Styrofoam shippers insulate the wine well. Bottle sleeves are invoiced at $0.20/ea.
We will include you (or your designated point person) to be notified by email at each stage of the shipment, so that you are aware of the movement of the package, from pick up to delivery.

How do we pay for an international shipment?

Currently, we will invoice you at the end of the shipment month, as we do when we create a manual shipping label. We will include the cost of:
  • Shipping
  • Duties/taxes (if applicable)
  • WD Admin fee
The WD Admin fee is typically a flat cost of $50 (but can vary a bit depending on the number of containers to ship), as we have opted to pass our shipping cost savings directly on to you and have not added a margin to these costs detailed in your estimate.
Credit: We will credit you back for the Will Call fulfillment costs, as those costs are included in the WD Admin fee.
